Colorful Cubes Quilt

Hello! I hope you are having a great day today! I wanted to share a quilt with you that I made as a result of a workshop I took at my quilt guild. The workshop was taught by Josephine Millett, a member of our guild. We used the pattern Colorful Cubes, by ItsSewSue Patterns. The optical illusion of the empty 3D cubes is achieved by using a light, medium, and dark fabric for each cube, placed in a specific location on each cube. I chose to use leftover fabric from my cubes to make a piano key border for the quilt. This pattern is similar to Tumbling Blocks in the 3D illusion it gives.

It was a fun class and I was really motivated to finish it at home! It measures about 45" square. I am thinking of giving it to a little boy in our church that has been receiving chemo treatments for cancer. I know you often get cold while getting treatments, and I thought this "quilt of many colors" might keep him warm, and remind him how much God loves him.

Do you quilt? Have you ever tried a 3D quilt? It's alot of fun as long as you follow the directions to a tee. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  1. You are an inspiration to me, Susan. I am currently working on a quilt for my first grandchild, expected at the end of August. I have never tried a pattern as complicated as your Colorful Cubes! Thank you for the gentle nudge to get moving on my own project!! :)

  2. Teresa - thanks for the words of encouragement! Sometimes I wonder if anyone even looks at this blog. This pattern isn't nearly as complicated as it looks. It's mostly strip piecing - no set in seams at all. I'm ready to make another one! Hope your baby quilt is going well. Baby quits are always so fun to make. I've got a grandson coming in October. His room will be decorated nautical, so I am going to do a baby quilt with boats on it. I need to get started on it.

  3. Hi Susan,

I am taking a class at my local quilt guild on the Colorful Cubes quilt, so I googled for images to give me ideas for colors & styles. Your BEAUTIFUL quilt came up first in line & it is GORGEOUS! Knocks my socks off with all those intense colors, so wonderfully combined.

If mine comes out half as nice as yours, I'll be thrilled!

Did you use a certain line of fabrics or are all these luscious colors from your stash?

Thanks so much for posting your quilt, as you have inspired me to go with similar colors...I just ♥♥♥ them!

    1. Hello! Thanks for the kind words about this quilt! I am not normally a loud color quilt kind-a-gal, so this was a stretch for me. I just stopped at our local quilt shop and picked out a light, medium and dark of seven different colors. I was going for a rainbow color scheme. I was pleased with it when it was done. Several other ladies in the guild did scrappy ones and they were gorgeous too!
